Manual Lymphatic Drainage vs. Traditional Massage

1 min read

Lymphatic drainage massage is very different from a traditional relaxation or deep-tissue massage.

Traditional massage may focus on:

  • Muscle tension

  • Knots and tight muscles

  • Deep pressure

  • Relaxation

  • Soft-tissue manipulation

Manual lymphatic drainage focuses on:

  • Gentle skin-stretching techniques

  • Lymphatic pathways

  • Fluid movement

  • Swelling management

  • Supporting lymphatic circulation

  • Post-operative recovery when appropriate

MLD is generally performed with much lighter pressure than deep-tissue massage. The objective is not to "push hard" on the body but to work with the superficial lymphatic system.
